Education can improve the functioning of people with ASD. What impact Appropriate Education has on the school placement of autistic pupils is not yet entirely clear. In shaping appropriate and more inclusive education, it is necessary to evaluate how specialised education provision contributes to the development of autistic pupils.
The study
We look at changes in school placement of autistic pupils since the introduction of ''Passend Onderwijs'' . We are also looking at what factors may play a role in this, for example age and behavioural characteristics.
We would like to know more about how a specialised learning environment plays a role in the functioning of autistic pupils. For example: What is the impact of being educated in a school with only autistic classmates? What is the role of the teacher or lecturer on the development of self-knowledge of children and adolescents with autism? And what contribution does the design of a school building and classroom have on the stimulus processing of autistic pupils?
In this project, we cooperate with the Leo Kanner Education Group. This education group provides specialised education at six schools for special education (SO) and secondary special education (VSO) in the Leiden region. Three of these schools are only open to pupils with an autism spectrum diagnosis. Parents are invited through the school to complete a questionnaire.
