Netherlands Autism Register (NAR)

Together we know more

What does the Netherlands Autism Register do?

The Netherlands Autism Register (NAR) conducts research on autism. We do this mainly with online questionnaires. We want to know more about the lives of autistic people in the Netherlands. For instance, about their lifestyle, feelings and education/work.

The information from the NAR is important for scientific research. In this video, lead researcher Sander Begeer and participant René explain what exactly the NAR does. Want to know more? Then click here.

Within the NAR, we find it important to collaborate with autistic people. That way, we make sure our research is really about and for them. We call this co-creation.

We share the results of our research in various ways: through the NAR in figures, personal overviews, municipal figures, publications and reports.

Want to help us learn more?

You can apply for the Dutch Autism Register if you live in the Netherlands and belong to one of these four groups:

  • I have autism myself and am 16 years or older.
  • I am the parent or carer of a child with autism younger than 16.
  • I am the (legal) representative of a person with autism and a severe care need, who is legally incapacitated and older than 16.
  • I do not have autism myself and am 16 years or older and I do not have an immediate family member with autism (such as a brother, sister, father, mother, child).

Here you can find all the information about registering as a participant with the NAR.

Facts from our research

  • Not all people with autism work with computers. Many autistic people work in care.
  • In the Netherlands, most autistic people and parents prefer to say 'person with autism' rather than 'autistic person'. But this is different for everyone.
  • Autistic children learn social things better if they have a sibling, especially an older one. Playing and talking together helps their development.
  • Sleeping well is important for autistic adults to feel happy. It also helps if you have nice people around you.
