HOME - living, leisure and happiness

Previous research suggests that autistic individuals are generally less satisfied with their lives than those without autism. What causes this is not yet entirely clear. In addition, little is known about the experiences and needs of people with autism in the areas of living and leisure. These two life domains make an important contribution to our everyday happiness in life.

The study

Therefore, in the HOME project we use questionnaires to investigate the living situation, needs and obstacles that autistic adolescents and adults experience in terms of housing and leisure. What is the proportion of people living independently, and what factors contribute to this? What are reasons for people to move? How do people spend their leisure time, and what provides recreation?

We also want to examine the extent to which living situations and life satisfaction change over time. For example, how did the COVID-19 pandemic affect people with and without autism? With the HOME project, we are trying to contribute directly and indirectly to a better quality of life for people with autism.

Results

Results of the research are fed back via the NAR website under the heading 'Publications and results'. Here you will find all our scientific articles, articles in Autism Magazine, and the NAR's annual reports. At NAR in figures, you will also find outcomes at municipality and/or province level. This can provide insight into regional differences, which are to be expected since the decentralisation of care.
